Getting paid correctly

Do you need followers to do UGC?

No. And when a listing asks for one anyway, it is almost always telling you the job has been mislabelled, which changes what you should charge.

Last updated 7 September 2026

This is the single most common confusion in UGC, and it costs people money in both directions. Creators turn down work they were qualified for, and creators accept influencer rates for influencer work while calling it UGC.

The whole thing in one line. In real UGC you deliver files and the brand runs them from their own account. Your audience is not part of the deal, so your follower count is irrelevant to the work and to the price.

Why nobody asks a commercial director for their follower count

UGC is ad inventory. The brand buys footage, cuts it for their feeds, and runs it as a paid ad from their own handle, targeted at whoever they choose. The ad does not reach your audience. It reaches the audience the brand paid to reach.

That is why a UGC brief cares about whether you can light a shot, hold a hook for three seconds and hit a deadline, and does not care whether four hundred people or forty thousand follow you.

So why do listings ask anyway?

Three reasons, and they call for different responses.

1. They mean influencer work and used the wrong word

Very common. If they want you to post it on your own account, they are buying your audience, not your camera work. That is influencer marketing, it is priced on reach rather than per deliverable, and it should cost more than a UGC rate, not the same.

This is the expensive version of the mix-up. Quoting a UGC rate for a post on your feed gives away the audience for free.

2. They are using it as a lazy proxy for "has done this before"

Some brands cannot tell a good creator from a bad one, so they use a number as a filter. A portfolio usually beats it. Three finished pieces that look like ads, sent as links, will get further than arguing about the requirement.

3. It is a platform requirement, not a brand one

Some marketplaces gate applications on follower count regardless of the job. Nothing to argue with there. Apply elsewhere.

The question that sorts it in one line

Copy this

Quick clarification before I quote: are you looking for the raw files to run from your own account, or do you want me to post this on mine? I price those differently so I want to get it right for you.

Nobody has ever taken offence at that question. The answer decides everything that follows.

They sayThe job isPrice on
"Send us the files"UGCPer deliverable, plus usage rights
"Post it on your page"InfluencerReach, plus licensing if they also want to run it as an ad
"Post on this account we set up"Canvas or tech UGCPer video, and check the hourly before agreeing
"Post regularly, keep the tag in bio"AmbassadorMonthly, against the actual hours it takes

What actually gets you booked instead

  • A portfolio that looks like ads. Three to five finished pieces beat any follower number. They can be spec work for brands you have never worked with, as long as they look real.
  • A hook that holds. The first three seconds are most of the job. Brands are buying retention, and it is visible in the first frame.
  • Being easy to work with. Delivering on the date, sending an invoice that makes sense, answering questions in writing. An unglamorous differentiator that wins repeat work more than talent does.

If a brand insists on a follower minimum for work you never post, they have not thought it through. That is worth one polite question. It is not worth discounting yourself over.
